Lacing field boots

From: Peggy

Dear Jessica, this question may be too stupid for HORSE SENSE but I haven't been able to get help anywhere, even at my tack store. I am one of the few English riders in a mostly Western area, my tack shop carries Western and English supplies but the owner really doesn't know much about the English side of the store. I ride in an old and much loved pair of field boots that I have had for almost eight years. They are so comfortable and soft, they are more like socks than boots. I just love them. About a month ago, one of the laces broke and I was going to take it to the tack store but forgot where I put it, and lost it somewhere I guess. So I took the other one out of the boot and took it to the tack shop because I wasn't sure that the owner would understand what I was talking about if I just asked him for laces for field boots. He found them in one of his English catalogs and ordered new ones for me, but when they arrived I realized that since I hadn't left one in the boot, I had no clue how to lace them! I feel so stupid, I've worn those boots just about every single day for eight years and I don't remember how the laces go in???? The laces were already laced when I bought them and all I've ever done is tighten them or loosen them and tie them! I know that they tie in the middle, but I can't figure out how to lace up the boots so that they come out with both ends of the lace in the middle. I'm sorry if this is stupid but I'm so frustrated and I want to wear my wonderful comfortable old boots again! You are so good at explaining things, could you please explain to me how to lace my boots? I feel like an idiot even writing that question! Thank you so very much,

Peggy

Hi Peggy! That's not a stupid question at all, and it's not easy to answer, either. I sat down and looked at my own field boots and tried to write out a clear explanation, but two pages later I gave up the attempt - it was like trying to give someone a haircut over the phone.

Some things need to be shown - some explanations need to be illustrated. Fortunately for both of us, and for everyone else who rides in field boots, the folks at Dehner (source of great custom boots, in case you're not familiar with the firm) have a website that provides an ILLUSTRATED guide to lacing field boots. Here is the URL for Dehner:

http://www.dehner.com/

If you'll go there and look at the menu on the left, you'll find that the fourth item from the bottom is titled "How to Lace Your Field Boots". Click on that link and you'll find just what you need. Good luck, and I hope you can continue to enjoy your comfortable old boots for many more years.

By the way, I'm convinced that there is only ONE stupid question, and that's the one you don't ask. Aren't you glad you asked this one? ;-)

Jessica
