Supplement buckets

From: Judy

Dear Jessica, thank you so much for what you do, it seems that every week I find another of my questions answered without my having to ask it! I enjoy HORSE SENSE more than any of my horse magazines. You are so good to do this for all of us.

My problem isn't exactly a horse problem, but it is horse-related. I feed my horses several supplements; my gelding gets a pelleted supplement for his hooves and my broodmares get a special "mare" mix, also pelleted. They all eat their supplements and seem to like the taste, but I have a terrible time getting the lids off those big buckets! I don't know why the manufacturers have to make lids that just about won't come off. I can lift 100-pound haybales, with hooks and gloves of course, but the point is that I'm not exactly weak. But those lids are impossible. My husband says "Just leave the lids off" but I like to CLOSE my buckets before I put them away. I worry about bugs getting into them, or the horses getting into the feed room, anyway I think I should be able to take those darn lids off without hurting my hands, bending my fingernails backward, and practically spraining my wrist every time. Can you help????

Judy

Hi Judy! Thanks for the kind words; I'm glad you're enjoying HORSE-SENSE.

Oddly enough, this just came up at a clinic, and although I didn't know the answer then, I do now. Those lids ARE incredibly hard to remove, I know, I've experienced everything you described. But NO MORE. One of my clinic riders brought her horse, her supplement bucket, and a fantastic item that lets her remove those lids very easily. We ALL tried it out, of course! She said that it's called a "Can Opener", and she had bought hers from one of the vet supply catalogues. She wasn't sure which one, but thought it was KV (1-800-423-0211, in case you want to call them and order one).

It's about time something like this came along -- let me know if you get this, and how it works for you!

Jessica
